Detox Drinks

1. The claims made by this article are:

    1. Latest bottled water makes you sportier, healthier, and less hung-over
    2. It provides the body with extra oxygen
    3. Helps remove toxins and ensures a stronger immune system
    4. Assists the respiratory system, so you recover better from exercise
    5. Detox benefits
    6. Enhances flavors to make food taste better

There is not sufficient information in this article to back up the claims it makes.

  1. This article is lacking information on the size of the group they collected their claims
    1. It does not specify if the participants were blind or expected the outcome
    2. The reporter did not provide commentary from independent scientists
    3. The reporter did not list the limitations of the study or the studies on which he was participating in

  2. There is no data presented in this article to substantiate the claim that water improves help. It only provides "hearsay."

Oxygizer Improves Performance?

It appears that the author of the newspaper article only read the promotional material.

    1. The claims differ in the sense that in the scientific journal all the claims made have actual facts to back up what they are conveying and the claims made are only providing information on the product rather than marketing it. On the product website they are trying to sell the product in order to profit, thus making claims to add mass appeal to the product.
    2. I would be more skeptical of the results presented by the hired scientist because the outcome of the study is likely to favor the company that is providing the paycheck.
    3. Yes, I believe this is a willful attempt to deceive potential costumers.

Political Cartoons

1. Clues such as: The protestors focusing on the fact that they strongly believe stem cell research is "murder" and completely disregarding the fact that stem cell research can help cure diseases such as, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The other clue is that the people attending church are standing with the voice that is rebuking and condoning those that participate in stem cell research, but are praying that their loved ones can be cured. Obviously these people are relying on faith rather than science.

2. I don’t believe you can trust that a cartoon is scientifically accurate because the foundation of it is conveyed through someone creativity and imagination which could be bias. I would consider a scientific journal when seeking scientific accuracy.

3. I think the issue of whether or not an embryo is a human could be proven by science, but ultimately it is a personal conclusion that is influenced by religion, experiences, etc.

Race and Medicine

  1. In this article the evidence that racial categories may be important to medical practice is when it states that, "studies have shown that blacks have higher rates of hypertension" when informing on studies between black and white American’s.
  2. The evidence presented that argues against the idea is that white American’s were shown to have higher levels that Nigerians and Jamaicans, who are "ethnically" black.
  3. I would need to know that there are more conditions that are shown more prevalent in one ethnicity that reside in a geographical location that has sufficient diversity.

Should Children Be Immunized?

    1. I believe the number of participants in each of these studies is sufficient to base sound conclusions. Although, the more—the merrier.
    2. I don’t think the conclusions made by the scientists overstate the implications of their results and is consistent with good science.
    3. Not choosing to vaccinate your child could spread disease to those that are too young and those who cannot be vaccinated due to immune deficiency disorders thus putting them at a higher risk of contraction.
