Interviewer: Darcy Martinez
Interviewee: Charlie Perry
Title of Interviewee: Founder/Owner/Chef at local restaurant, Eva
Location of interview: Eva, Salt Lake City, Utah
Duration of interview: 17:08 min
The interview I conducted with Charlie Perry, whom I admire so much, was very successful. I was able to gather sufficient research and background about him and his fine dining establishment that I have favored for a few years, now.
I chose to interview Charlie Perry because I, one day would like to open my own restaurant. Not only a restaurant, but one where the vibe was relaxed, yet the surroundings kept stylish and inviting just as Charlie has achieved at Eva. The menu is creative, fun and delish, yet simple. You also can’t beat its affordable prices. All of these factors have contributed to its success. Every time I have dined at his restaurant-- his customer’s, including myself are so pleased. I have been a huge fan of his restaurant and the genius behind its magic since my first dining experience at Eva.
Our interview began and ended very well. I introduced myself and expressed how appreciative I was at the opportunity of interviewing him and the time he took out of his schedule. Following my introduction I proceeded to provide Charlie with a clear explanation of the type of information I was pursuing, as well as I was seeking it. He was very polite, humble and charismatic. The flow of the interview was great, as he was very approachable and not the slightest bit intimidating. I must say his passion for fine cuisine was evident and knowledge of business was undeniable, despite his unintimidating demeanor. Meeting and interviewing Charlie Perry was so inspiring. I was able to attain helpful tricks of the trade and tips on how to open and maintain a successful restaurant/ business—all while staying humble and cool.
Techniques I utilized for this interview were gathered from our textbook. Chapter 6 had many useful and informative suggestions on how to conduct a smooth, effective interview. Studying the material equipped me with how to properly plan my interview, define my goal and choose the best structure for it. Along with organizing my interview, the chapter had a section on greeting and building rapport, which I found extremely helpful, as rapport is the essence of interviewing.
To conclude, I believe rapport between Charlie Perry and I was built effortlessly. Gaining knowledge and inspiration from him was greatly achieved. After asking him the questions I had prepared, I once again thanked him for being such a great interviewee and my admiration for his hard work and talent. We conversed for a short while following the interview as roles were reversed and he asked me a few questions about my future goals and what my favorite dishes on the menu were. I responded and he then sent me off with lavender flavored chocolate and a successful interview!
